Discover the charm of Aarhus: a city of culture, history, and Scandinavian allure.

Updated: Apr 17, 2023

Being a lone parent, I love bargain travel and have travelled frequently with my four daughters since the youngest was just under one and the oldest seven.

February (23) halftime was looming, so as usual, I scoured Skyscanner for a few days and got flights for £16 return! I knew nothing about Aarhus, but that’s all part of the adventure.

I looked on Bookings.com, and it became apparent Denmark is an expensive country, so I booked us into a hostel in the city centre; it was my first stay in a hostel, and it was fantastic. My eldest is now at university, so the four of us did not know what to expect…..

Are you looking for an adventure in Denmark?

Well, look no further than Aarhus! This charming city on the east coast of Jutland, Denmark, has everything from fascinating museums to cosy cafes and beautiful beaches.

Places to visit.

1. Explore the Old Town

One of the best places to start your visit to Aarhus is in the charming Old Town (Den Gamle By). This open-air museum is home to over seventy-five historic buildings across Denmark, including houses, shops, and workshops. As a result, you can step back in time and experience life in Denmark from the 17th to the early 20th century.

2. Visit ARoS Art Museum

ARoS is one of the largest art museums in Scandinavia and a must-visit for art lovers. The museum's iconic rainbow panorama offers stunning views of the city, and the permanent collection includes works by famous artists such as Andy Warhol and Picasso.

3. Stroll Through the Botanical Garden

Located in the heart of Aarhus, the Botanical Garden is a peaceful oasis in the city. With over 4,000 plant species from around the world, the garden is a beautiful place to relax and enjoy nature.

4. Experience the Aarhus Street Food Market

The Aarhus Street Food Market is a vibrant and bustling food hall showcasing some of Denmark's best street food. With over 30 vendors serving everything from classic Danish dishes to international cuisine, there's something for everyone. We ate here daily as the food was unique and affordable.

5. Relax on the Beach

Aarhus is located on the coast of Jutland, which means you are always close to a beautiful beach. Head to Den Permanente, a popular beach just north of the city centre, for a day of sun, sand, and sea if visiting in the summer months.

6. Take a Bike Tour

Aarhus is a bike-friendly city, and one of the best ways to explore is on two wheels. There are plenty of bike rental options in the city, and you can take a guided tour to learn more about Aarhus' history and culture.

7. Enjoy the Nightlife

Aarhus has a thriving nightlife scene, with plenty of bars, clubs, and live music venues. Head to Jægergårdsgade, a trendy neighbourhood just south of the city centre, for some of the best nightlife in Aarhus.
